So, we are now in Appium 2.0. In fact I am using 2.13. A few months ago, when I tried to look at Appium. I was able to set it up with Amazon Corretto Java 8. However, when I started running the tests, I used to get various exceptions. Shhh! there are some appium interview questions too, so read on till the end.

Appium interview question 1:

What were some of the challenges with appium?

Unfortunately, some folks cannot simply figure out why test cases did not execute.
So, I did a fresh install with Java 21, and suddenly things were much better. Figuring out versions of dependencies was another pain. Surely an alert like A newer version of Java should be suggested/recommended.

Also, too many android versions

Please walk us through your appium setup?

Upgraded IntelliJ to the latest version Community 2024.1 read about it here
Installed the latest version of Android Studio
Ensure adb is also downloaded and installed
Removed any other Java installations and went only with JDK 21 (there is no JRE here)
Installed git bash on Windows 11, because I like the Linux/Unix style
Installed Nodejs for Windows
Installed npm for downloading packages
Installed Appium Inspector
Set up emulators for Android devices on Android Studio
Install Maven
Ensure path and environment variables are set.. right
Installed dependencies using maven after creating a maven project on IntelliJ
Dependencies such as TestNG, appium.io, selenium java, and selenium remote driver. Pain point: some versions are not compatible with each other. Solution (Java 21, makes you use the latest versions of the dependencies easily.
Downloaded and installed a testable app into the emulator device. On a real device, enable developer mode. However, some banking applications on your phone may not allow you to use their apps unless you disable developer mode.
Or, use:

adb install pathname/to/app-under-test.apk

Set up the appium inspector with all the Desired capabilities, url could be your localhost( http://127.0.0.1:4723/ ), remotepath = /
Launch git bash and type appium. Hit enter
If you are not using gestures, this should be fine for now

Open the IntelliJ IDE, write your Java code and hope it will run. Yes, there could be some things I have missed but you get the idea.

The problem with some Software testers could be that, they need to get their automation environment up and running. Anything that makes the process easy is a godsend.

All this is for the UiAutomator2 framework. You can try other frameworks like Robot with appium which could be much easier to setup.
